Song Settings: Make every song look the way you want
Every song on OzBCoz can be adjusted to suit you. Bigger text if you are reading from a music stand. Chord names above the words instead of beside them. Nothing here changes the song itself, only how it is shown to you.
Open the panel with โ๏ธ Settings in the menu bar. You do not need to work through all of it โ set two or three things and the rest can wait.
๐ก Handy hint: The panel comes in two halves. The upper part has the settings with a value beside them, such as fonts and sizes. Below the grey DISPLAY OPTIONS line are the tick boxes. If something you expected is missing, scroll further down inside the panel. On a phone or tablet, drag it upwards.
Start with these three
These make the biggest difference, and most people never need anything else.
Your instrument โ this one is not in the Settings panel. It is the first item in the menu bar, showing what you are currently set to along with its tuning. Click it to pick a different instrument and the chord diagrams change to match.
Text font size โ how big the words are. Worth setting larger than you think if the page will sit on a music stand. This size is also used if you create a PDF.
Chordnames โ where the chord names sit. Inline puts them in amongst the words, which is the standard on this site. You can also have them above the lyrics, or as small names over the words, which is the layout the Dr Uke site uses.
๐ก Handy hint: The small chord names over the words look good on screen but cause problems when you create a PDF or a Word document. If you are going to print, one of the other two is safer.
Make it easier to read
If the words are a struggle, these are the ones to reach for, and they can be combined.
Lyrics font โ Helvetica, Arial, Monospace, Medium (slightly bolder), Narrow, Low Vision or Dyslexia. There is not much between the first two, but Low Vision and Dyslexia are there for a reason and are worth trying if reading is hard work.
Monochrome theme โ puts the whole song in black. Less decoration, more contrast.
Lyrics bold, Headings bold, Remove bold from Chord names and Comments bold โ four separate boxes, so you can thicken up only the part you find hardest to see.
Make Instrumental Chord Colours the same as the Lyrics ones โ By default the instrumental block is all of one colour (including the chords). This allows the chord colours for the song to be used in the instrumental.
Fit more on the page
Useful when a song runs onto a second sheet and you would rather it did not.
Header font size โ the size of the title as a percentage of the words. Turn it down to claw back space at the top, or up if you want the title to stand out.
Sub header font size โ the same for the sub title, key, artist and writer.
Line spacing โ tighten the lines together or spread them apart. 1.2 is the usual starting point.
Hide section headings โ removes the labels at the top of sections. If a song has a {soc} directive it prints a line saying CHORUS; this takes those out.
Chords in 1 column โ the chord diagrams normally sit in two columns down the side. One column leaves more room for the words.
Diagram size โ smaller diagrams free up space, larger ones help while you are still learning the shapes.
Width โ this matters most when making a PDF. It sets whether the page is US Letter, A4, or the full width of your screen. On a phone or tablet, Full is usually right. If words are being cut off at the end of lines, this is the setting to experiment with.
Change how the chords are written
The standard is ordinary chord names in square brackets, [A] and [B] and so on. If that suits you, skip this section.
Notation โ as well as Standard, you can show the song in Roman or Nashville notation. Both are key independent, naming chords by their position in the key rather than by letter. [I], [IV] and [V] mean the first, fourth and fifth chord, so in the key of A they would be A, D and G. Nashville does the same with ordinary numbers. Useful if you play with people in different keys.
Remove [ ] from chordnames โ takes the square brackets away. Tidier, especially with the chord names above the words.
Chords in alphabetical order โ ticked to start with. Untick it and the diagrams appear in the order the song uses them instead.
Note names under chordnames โ prints the note name under each string. A good learning aid.
Remove finger numbers on chords โ takes out the suggested finger positions, if you would rather work them out yourself.
Chord colour โ choose the colour the chord names are printed in.
Extra chord diagrams, if you want them
None of these are needed for ordinary playing, but they are handy in a group.
Second instrument chords โ adds the same chords for another instrument at the foot of the page, so a guitar player and a ukulele player can read from one sheet.
if you click on Show Secondary Diagrams under primary diagrams then the secondary intstrument diagrams will show just under the primary ones (not at the foot of the page - unless Bottom is picked for the primary diagrams)
Piano chords โ the same idea, with piano shapes.
Show left hand chords โ shows the diagrams reversed for left handed players.
Ignore common chords โ leaves out diagrams for the chords you already know. There is a list of those, and you can change what is in it. Make sure you separate the chordnames with commas.
Change the page colours
Page background and Content background both start at Theme default, meaning they follow whichever theme you have chosen at the top of the screen. Tick the box beside either one and you can set your own colour instead, just for this song.
Handy if a particular song needs more contrast than the rest. For everything at once, see Themes.
Save your choices
Settings only last as long as you are looking at the song, unless you tell the site to keep them. The buttons are at the very bottom of the panel.
๐พ Save Settings โ keeps these choices for this song. Next time you open it, it looks the same way again.
โ Save current view as defaults โ takes what you are looking at now and makes it the starting point for every song you open. This is the one to use once you have found a layout that suits you. See Default Settings.
Auto-save changes to this favourite โ remembers changes to this song automatically, without your having to press Save each time.
Your settings also decide how the song comes out as a PDF, so anything set here is what you get in a printed songbook. If you are gathering songs into a book, see Favourites.
๐ Remove clears the saved settings for this song and cannot be undone. The song goes back to your defaults.
