If you find yourself making the same adjustments every time you open a song — bigger text, a different font, the chord diagrams somewhere else — you can set those once and have every song open that way from then on.
That is what Defaults are for. Settings changes the song in front of you. Defaults change every song you open afterwards.
Defaults is on the Songs Index page, not on the song page. Click Defaults in the menu and a panel drops down with the options in it.
💡 Handy hint: People often look for this on a song page and cannot find it. It lives on the Songs Index because it applies to all songs rather than the one you are reading.
Change whatever you want in the panel, then click Save Defaults. Nothing is kept until you do. Your choices are stored against your account, so they follow you to any device you log in on.
💡 Handy hint: Changing the options in the panel shows you nothing until you save. If you want to see what a setting actually looks like before committing to it, try it on a song first through Settings, and once you are happy come back here and set it as your default.
These are the same options described on the Settings page, so look there for what each one does.
Text and spacing — Font Size, Lyrics font (Helvetica, Arial, Monospace, Low Vision or Dyslexia), Instrumental chord names colours, Line spacing, Title size, Subtitle size.
Chord diagrams — Diagram size, Diagram position (Top, Bottom, Right or Hide), Show left hand diagrams, single column, Show finger numbers, note names below the diagrams.
Chord names — Chord position (inline with the lyrics, above the lyrics, or above with a mini diagram), Chord colour (Red, Blue, Brick, Black or Green), Chord sort order (alphabetical or in the order they appear), Remove [ ] on chords.
Easier reading — Mono colour scheme, Make lyrics bold, Make headers bold, Make chordnames bold.
Extra chords at the bottom — Piano diagrams, Second instrument. So you could have ukulele at the top and guitar or mandolin underneath.
Paper — Paper size: Full screen, A4 or Letter.
💡 Handy hint: A couple of things worth knowing. Line spacing of 1.2 is the standard and a good place to start. And the mini chord diagrams above the lyrics are not available for six string instruments.
Your defaults apply to every song you open, with one exception. If you have saved settings for a particular song through Settings, those win for that song.
So the order is simple. A song's own saved settings come first. Your defaults come next. Anything you have not set at all falls back to what the site does normally.
That is usually what you want. Set your defaults for everyday reading, then override individual songs where you need something different — a long one squeezed onto a single sheet, or a tricky one with larger diagrams.
Come back to the Defaults panel any time, change what you like, and click Save Defaults again.
Remove Defaults clears all of your saved defaults at once and cannot be undone. Songs go back to the site's standard layout, though any settings you have saved against individual songs are not affected.
